From Tail to Head, From Beneath to Above
God calls His people to be the head and above, not the tail or beneath. In Christ, we rise from fear and defeat into authority, vision, and victorious living.
And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you heed the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them.” – Deuteronomy 28:13 NKJV
This verse comes as part of God’s covenant blessings to Israel, tied directly to obedience. It is framed with striking contrasts—head versus tail, above versus beneath—each highlighting the difference between walking in God’s blessing through obedience and living outside of it.
First, God promises to make His people the head and not the tail. The image of the head speaks of authority, direction, and influence. To be the head is to carry responsibility, not pride. It is about stewardship, not domination. Leaders set the tone, chart the course, and bear the weight of decisions. God calls His people to think differently, live with integrity, and operate from heaven’s perspective rather than simply following the patterns of the world.
In contrast, the tail symbolizes limitation, reaction, and lack of control. The tail does not lead; it merely follows, dragged along by what comes before it. But God’s promise is clear: His children are not destined to live reactive lives, always behind, always swayed, always without direction.
Second, God assures us that we will be above only and not beneath. To be above is to live in victory, favor, and divine positioning. It means not being crushed by circumstances, fears, or sin, but lifted by God into a higher way of living. Above is the place of clarity and perspective, where you see further, think higher, and live differently than those bound beneath by doubt, defeat, or compromise.
By contrast, beneath suggests being pressed down, overshadowed, and diminished. To live beneath is to exist under constant weight, where vision is obscured, influence is stifled, and life feels reactive rather than purposeful. Yet God’s promise remains firm: His people will not remain beneath.
Still, many today live as the tail and beneath. They move only when circumstances push them or when culture dictates direction. Instead of walking in faith, they react in fear. Instead of leading with conviction, they compromise under pressure. But the good news is this: in Christ, God offers freedom from such a cycle.
To no longer live as the tail or beneath is to live intentionally—anchored in God’s Word, guided by His Spirit, and walking in obedience. It is stepping out of passivity and into purpose. It is refusing to let sin, shame, or circumstances drag us down, and instead choosing to walk in the authority and identity that are ours in Jesus Christ.
Reflection Question: Am I living like the head and above, walking in obedience and faith, or am I living like the tail and beneath, reacting to circumstances and fear?
Application: Choose one area of life where you feel “beneath” or “dragged along.” Submit it to God in prayer, and commit to a step of obedience that lifts you into the place of faith and victory.
Prayer: Lord, thank You for calling me to be the head and not the tail, above only and not beneath. Help me walk in obedience, live with vision, and reflect Your glory in all I do.
Declaration: I am the head and not the tail. I am above only and not beneath. Through Christ, I live with authority, victory, and clarity, walking in obedience to God’s Word.
