My Shield, My Glory, and the Lifter of My Head
The Lord God Almighty protects us when we’re under attack, honours us when we’re shamed, and lifts our heads when they hung low in defeat and humiliation.
But You, O Lord, are a shield for me, My glory and the One who lifts up my head.” — Psalm 3:3 (NKJV)
In Psalm 3, we find David fleeing from his own son Absalom who staged a coup to dethrone his father, David. He found himself surrounded by enemies as he fled. His closest friends, like Ahitophel betrayed him while others mocked him, declaring that God would not save him.
Unfazed by this turbulent storm, David made a bold declaration of faith: “But You, O Lord, are a shield for me.” While a shield refers to a small piece of armour that only protects part of the body, the Hebrew word, magen, refers to a large, encompassing shield—one that covers the entire person. David reminded himself that God’s protection surrounds him on every side. To him, no attack of the enemy, slanderous word, or betrayal could penetrate the shield of God’s presence. The Lord continues to be a shield for those whose trust is in Him yesterday, today, and forever.
Also, David called the Lord his glory despite the humiliation he endured. David had ascended the throne having accumulated some glorious military victories. However, he was stripped of this glory while he fled in shame from his son. In times of humiliation or shame, God Himself becomes our honor. When the world strips away titles, reputation, or dignity, He crowns us with His glory and honour.
Finally, David declares that the Lord is the One who lifts up my head. David fled from his son with his head hung low, walking barefooted and weeping in shame. But he never lost sight of the fact that the Lord would lift up his head. When our heads hung low due to shame, fear, and discouragement, God tenderly raises our heads, not in pride, but in confidence and hope. He restores courage and reminds us that our story is not over.
Today, whatever battle you face, take comfort in this truth: the Lord is your shield, your glory, and the lifter of your head. Trust Him to surround you, honor you, and restore you.
Reflection: Reflect on an area where fear or discouragement has weighed you down. How can you choose instead to trust God as your shield, your glory, and the lifter up of your head?
Prayer: Lord, thank You for being my shield, my glory, and the lifter of my head. Help me to rest in Your protection and walk in Your hope. Amen.
