No Exceptions; Give Thanks in Everything
Thanksgiving is not confined to good times; it flows in every season. By remembering God’s faithfulness, we find strength to give thanks in all things and trust Him fully.
“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NKJV)
Thanksgiving is more than a holiday; it is a lifestyle God desires His children to embrace. Paul reminds us that gratitude is not optional, nor is it reserved only for good times. Instead, we are called to give thanks in everything.
The word “everything” is both simple and stretching. It leaves no room for exceptions. Paul does not say “in some things” or “in good things,” but in everything give thanks. Gratitude, therefore, is not confined to mountaintop experiences—it must also be practiced in the valleys. Thanksgiving is to flow from our hearts whether we are celebrating victories or enduring hardships.
Thanksgiving begins with remembering. Too often we forget how far God has brought us, how many prayers He has answered, and how many dangers He has delivered us from. Paul’s command is not merely about reacting to the present—it is about remembering God’s faithfulness in the past and trusting Him for the future.
True thanksgiving recognizes God’s hand in every circumstance. It acknowledges that every good and perfect gift comes from Him, and even challenges carry hidden blessings. Gratitude softens our hearts, opens our eyes to His faithfulness, and strengthens our trust in His plan. It transforms ordinary moments into opportunities for worship and trials into testimonies of His sustaining grace.
When we give thanks, we shift our focus from ourselves to God. Worry loosens its grip, bitterness is uprooted, and joy takes root. Thanksgiving aligns us with heaven’s perspective—it is an act of faith that declares, “Lord, I may not understand this season, but I know You are good, and I trust You.”
Today, pause to remember. Recall when God carried you, opened doors, healed wounds, or gave peace in the storm. Let memory fuel your thanksgiving until your heart overflows with gratitude and your lips with praise.
Application: Make a gratitude list today. Write down three things from your past, three from your present, and one you trust God for in the future—and give thanks for each.
Reflection Question: What area of your life right now is hardest to be thankful in, and how can remembering God’s past faithfulness help you give thanks in it?
Prayer: Lord, help me to give thanks in everything. Remind me of Your past faithfulness, strengthen me in the present, and fill me with hope for the future. Amen.
Declaration: I choose thanksgiving in every season. My gratitude is not based on circumstances but on God’s unchanging faithfulness. In everything, I will give thanks.
